The death toll in the corona virus outbreak first passed the millennium (1,016), according to public health reports in China during the night (Tuesday). The number of people infected with the virus now stands at 43,090 in 28 countries and autonomously, with 42,638 of them detected in China. According to Chinese health authorities, 108 people died yesterday. And just before dawn, it was detected in the 13th infected United States in San Diego, California.

This is one of the deadliest and fastest 21st century viral outbreaks. Whereas the economic damage done worldwide is valued at billions of dollars.

Wuhan's corona virus is just one of a large family of viruses in which the SARS virus also killed 700 people in an outbreak in China in 2002. The infection is from person to person, and researchers now estimate that his incubation period ranges from three days to 24.

The elusive symptoms of the virus and the fact that in many cases it does not erupt make it difficult to identify and help spread the disease. The virus causes severe sore throat, difficulty breathing and high fever. The mortality rate is about 2 percent of those infected.

The virus was first detected among merchants and visitors to the wholesale fish market of the city of Wuhan, which is now considered the epicenter of the disease outbreak. It is not entirely clear where the virus first came to humans, but researchers in the United States say it is related to bats and palm fronds, which are held for food in many markets in China. Other, more conspiracy theories, link the virus's emergence to a biological research institute located in Wuhan City.
