ARD Hammer! Famous show disappears from TV after more than 20 years

First the "golden camera", now the Bambi award. According to ZDF, ARD is also taking an established program out of the program.

The next bang on public television: After ZDF announced last year that it would be the last time to host the “Golden Camera” TV gala this year, ARD is now canceling an established program. The broadcaster takes the live broadcasts of the Bambi Galas out of the program - and that after almost a quarter of a century.

“The contract expired in 2019; there was a vote in the ARD not to conclude a new contract. We thank you for 24 years of trustful and successful cooperation. We wish Bambi all the best, ”said Thomas Schreiber, ARD coordinator for entertainment, on Thursday evening on dpa request.

Bambi-Aus at ARD: Criticism of the show increased

It is not clear what ultimately caused the ARD to cancel the show. However, there has recently been clear criticism both of the "Golden Camera", which disappears from TV after 55 years, and of the "Bambi" award.

For example, there were allegations that the programs were advertising events by publishers that were financed by radio broadcasts. But there was also blame for the content.

Bambi: ratings are falling

Remember the prank on Joko Winterscheidt's "Golden Camera", Klaas Heufer-Umlauf and the "Circus Halligalli" team, who had brought a double by Ryan Gosling on stage, and the Grimme Prize for "bitter media criticism" received.

Perhaps the steadily waning ratings were the decisive factor for the end.

Bambi: Live at ARD since the mid-1990s

“The 2019 award has reached over 7 billion media contacts, of which the ARD contributed 3.46 million television viewers. Regardless of the ARD's decision, Bambi functions as the largest European media award and as a popular brand regardless of channel, with or without TV. The cooperation with the ARD and especially the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk was successful and always innovative for over 20 years. Now we are going this way without the ARD, ”Welte said.

Hubert Burda Media's Bambi is one of the most important media awards in Germany. The award has existed since 1948. ARD has broadcast the award live on television since the mid-1990s.
