A team led by Lai Zhiqiang, deputy head of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering of CityU Institute of Technology, found in the study that water droplets generated from flushing can splash up to one meter away from the toilet board, and each flush can generate 14,000 To 80,000 drops of water. If the water tank is positioned higher than the toilet board, or if the valve is used to flush the system, water droplets will splash to a higher position.
The team found that the bacteria would follow the water droplets to pollute the toilet and follow the atomization process to float in the air. The finer the bacteria, the higher the concentration in the air after flushing.

The team reminded that simply covering the toilet board is not enough to prevent the spread of bacteria. It is necessary to clean the toilet tank with 1 to 49 diluted household bleach and 1 to 99 diluted bleach to clean the rest of the toilet. They suggested that the exhaust fan should be turned on for a long time to dilute the bacteria and viruses in the air. If there is no exhaust fan, the window should be opened.
