[Wuhan Pneumonia] City University: There is a gap between the toilet plate and the toilet cylinder. It is difficult to prevent the spread of bacteria.

The outbreak of a new coronavirus related to Wuhan pneumonia. Recently, some residents of Kangmei Building, Changkang Village, spread poison due to leakage from the exhaust pipe of the toilet connection dung, which has aroused public concern about toilet hygiene. A research team from the Department of Architecture and Shimu Engineering of CityU Institute of Technology found that during the flushing process, bacteria will splash with water droplets to the highest position one meter away from the toilet board, and will float in the air with the atomization process. There is a gap of several millimeters. Although covering the toilet board with flushing will help reduce bacterial contamination, bacteria will still adhere to the surface of the toilet cylinder, contaminating the location of the toilet board, washboard, floor, etc. The team reminded that covering the toilet board when flushing alone is not enough to prevent the spread of bacteria. It should be periodically cleaned with diluted bleach water, and it is best to turn on the exhaust fan to reduce bacteria.

Bacteria can contaminate the toilet with splashes of water

A team led by Lai Zhiqiang, deputy head of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering of CityU Institute of Technology, found in the study that water droplets generated from flushing can splash up to one meter away from the toilet board, and each flush can generate 14,000 To 80,000 drops of water. If the water tank is positioned higher than the toilet board, or if the valve is used to flush the system, water droplets will splash to a higher position.

The team found that the bacteria would follow the water droplets to pollute the toilet and follow the atomization process to float in the air. The finer the bacteria, the higher the concentration in the air after flushing.

The team reminded that covering the toilet board alone is not enough to prevent the spread of bacteria. (Profile picture)

Disinfection of toilet bowls and toilets at the same time

Because there is a gap of several millimeters between the toilet plate and the toilet cylinder, although flushing with the toilet plate can help reduce bacterial contamination, during the flushing process, bacteria will leave the toilet cylinder and float in the air through the atomization process. In addition, bacteria will adhere to the surface of the toilet bowl, and will float to the air through the atomization process after repeated flushing, contaminating the toilet board, washboard, floor, etc.

90% of bacteria can be reduced by turning on the exhaust fan for 30 minutes

The team reminded that simply covering the toilet board is not enough to prevent the spread of bacteria. It is necessary to clean the toilet tank with 1 to 49 diluted household bleach and 1 to 99 diluted bleach to clean the rest of the toilet. They suggested that the exhaust fan should be turned on for a long time to dilute the bacteria and viruses in the air. If there is no exhaust fan, the window should be opened. Lai Zhiqiang added that the study found that turning on the exhaust fan for 15 minutes reduced 87% of bacteria in the air, and 30 minutes reduced 98%. He also reminded to close the window before opening the exhaust fan.
