The Meta Yehuda Regional Council is opposed to setting up another quarry near its areas for fear of residents' health risk and environmental damage. Opponents submitted by the opponents stated that operating the quarry is likely to cause "heavy air pollution" and an increase in risk of lung disease morbidity. The Jerusalem District Planning and Building Committee is expected to discuss objections next week.

This is a program of an eagle company for aggregate quarry northeast of Beit Shemesh, in the area of Sorek Reserve. Earlier discussions in the planning committees noted that a shortage of 170 million tonnes is expected in the Jerusalem and Central region by 2040 in the Jerusalem and Central region, and the quarry will significantly reduce the shortage. It was also noted that the Jerusalem area was identified as having a high concentration and low competition by quarry operators.

The quarry is planned near three existing quarries and factories operating in the same area. The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of the Environment told the planning committee that they did not oppose the plan, even though this was among other areas in the area with high environmental sensitivity and residents' claims.

The quarry is planned about 1,200 meters from Moshav Naham, where several educational institutions operate, as well as an elderly club and youth club at risk. The Metz Yehuda Regional Council objected to the plan and demanded that an impact assessment be prepared on the health of students studying in the area. The council's opposition also states that existing quarries can be deepened and no additional quarry is needed. In addition to the council, the local committee of Moshav Naham objected to the plan.

"Due to the proximity of the petitioner's seat to a large number of quarries, the residents have for years been suffering from air pollution and other nuisances due to the operation of the quarries whose activity is characterized by the dispersion of dust clouds and sand that also make their way into the area of the seat," the committee's objection states. It was also noted that "the decision will be a cry for generations, first and foremost to the people of Naham and the surrounding area, and to their healthy living and lifestyle, as well as to the scenic environment, the beautiful ecological corridor in this area, to the many animals and hikers, when the economic expectation is at best questionable."

"Possibility of morbidity"

In an opinion on the environmental and health impact attached to the resistance, it was stated that the quarry activity would require the movement of many trucks and that every step in the process of producing the aggregates creates a dust emission, which could endanger the health of the residents. It was also noted that operating another quarry would cause "severe environmental pollution, dramatically deviating from the Ministry of the Environment's facilities, beyond the current pollution", it also states that there is a "clear possibility of morbidity as a result of exposure to dust / floating dust".

Residents also say the plan cannot be promoted because it is subject to the National Mining and Quarrying Outline Plan, which is currently in the High Court following a petition. And, they say, no alternatives to address aggregate demand have been explored, while shipping raw materials from more distant locations.
