An Israeli young man was sentenced yesterday (France) to two years in prison and a fine of € 14,000 for smuggling a winepress. The 20-year-old was arrested a week ago at a Paris airport for a 40-pound smuggling attempt.
The Department of Israelis Abroad in the Foreign Office Consular Division has been recognizing more than 100 cases of Israeli detention in Europe in the last year for smuggling of Gat luggage.
Punishment in Europe is getting worse and many young people are finding themselves in long-term detention facilities abroad. The Foreign Ministry is again warning young people and their families that they will not be tempted to propose to move a winepress to Europe, where it is illegal and considered a drug.
Recall, recently, the issue of Israelis imprisoned abroad rose to headlines following the Naama Issachar affair, which was released from Russian prison two weeks ago after being sentenced for trafficking and drug possession.
Last week, State President Reuben (Ruby) Rivlin asked President Pero to release Hoodia Monsango, a special-needs Israeli woman arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking six months ago.
