The reigning English champion, one of the most powerful clubs in the world, heavily sanctioned by UEFA. Accused of violating the rules of financial fair play, Manchester City was excluded from the next two editions of the Champions League and ordered to pay 30 million euros. The club, coached by Pep Guardiola, has announced that it will appeal the decision to the Sports Arbitral Tribunal (CAS).

Since 2008 and the arrival of the current president Khaldoon Al Mubarak, the club has considerable financial resources allowing him an ambitious recruitment. But the club has been found guilty by Uefa's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) of falsely inflating their sponsorship income. The guilty verdict follows an investigation triggered by the publication of emails and " leaked " documents by the German magazine Der Spiegel in November 2018.
