The editorial of Figaro Magazine: "Prophets of doom"

The times are not idyllic but there is nothing irreversible, says the editor, Guillaume Roquette.

Is Western man a big child? In any case, he loves to be scared these days. And not only with the coronavirus, which all indicates, however, that it will not be much more devastating than the SARS or the H1N1 flu were in their time. For an increasing number of our contemporaries, the epidemic from China would be only a pleasant joke next to what awaits us, and which is nothing less than the collapse of the world! Never behind in a neologism, sociologists have called this belief "collapsology" and measure with greed its diffusion in the population. It mainly appeals to young people but strikes, to varying degrees, all developed countries. According to a survey published this week, 35% of the French, 29% of the Italians and 19% of the Americans are thus convinced that our civilization will collapse within twenty years.

This disaster obviously does the business of the friendly catastrophist who predicts the worst for us every morning.
