The Syrian army's winter attack in Idlib province in the northwestern state has set Turkey and Russia facing each other this week, when a series of talks between senior officials failed to reach a mutually agreed solution.

Syrian regime forces advanced in the northern province and managed to conquer large numbers of villages and towns from the rebels, and for the first time in years managed to take control of every axis of the Milk-Damascus road, the country's most important transport artery. The Turkish army, on its part, provided artillery assistance to the insurgents after the bombing of the regime forces was actually killed this week. In total, 14 Turkish soldiers have been killed by Assad's army.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has given the Syrian army an ultimatum to withdraw from Idlib province by the end of February or risk a Turkish military operation in the region. To back up the threat, Erdogan sent thousands of Turkish troops, accompanied by hundreds of tanks, armored vehicles and artillery into northern Syria.

Turkish military buildup in Syria has exacerbated tensions between Ankara and Moscow, the main ally of the Assad regime, which provides logistical military assistance to Syrian military forces in its campaign in Idlib province. A series of meetings between a special Russian military delegation, along with a telephone conversation between Turkish army chief of staff Yasser Gouler and his Russian counterpart, and Alari Gersimov failed to relieve the country's foreign tensions expected to meet on Sunday in order to continue trying to find an agreed solution to escalation in Syria.

The one who rushed to take advantage of the Ankara-Moscow crisis was the United States, who quickly sided with Erdogan's positions. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sent US ambassador to Ankara Jim Jeffrey to hold emergency talks with Turkish officials in support of Turkey's stand against Russia in the Idlib crisis.

But Turkish hopes for a military aid to a Turkish operation in northern Syria shattered very quickly. On Wednesday, national security adviser Robert O'Brien said: "What are we supposed to do to stop what is happening in Syria? To plummet from the skies like a global policeman and order Syria, Iran and Russia to stop?"

His remarks provoked much anger in Turkey over the United States and the NATO alliance for his readiness to stand alongside Turkey in words. The media identified with the Erdogan regime in Turkey launched a virulent attack on the US ambassador and NATO alliance. But while the superpowers are struggling, those who pay the price of the ongoing attack on Idlib are 800,000 refugees, including 140,000 people who have fled their homes in the last three days, fleeing the Assad regime's winter offensive.

Sixty percent of the refugee population is children, who sneak into makeshift refugee camps near the Turkish border, when the harsh weather of northwestern Syria, which includes snowstorms, hits the caged tents where the refugees live.

David Swanson, a spokesman for the United Nations Syrian Brigade, said immediate and urgent resources were needed to save lives, alleviate the suffering of refugees, because he predicted their final number would reach over one million people. Increasingly, more and more people are draining into a small, growing area, with most of them having no more clothing on their bodies at the height of winter, "Swanson said.
