The outbreak of pneumonia in Wuhan caused by the new coronavirus has spread, and multiple confirmed cases have occurred in Taiwan. The Central Epidemic Epidemic Command Center said today (16) that the first case of death occurred in Taiwan.

The command center stated that two new cases were confirmed in Taiwan, one of which was a man in his mid 60s with a history of hepatitis B and diabetes, no history of travel, and no known close contacts of confirmed cases. He developed a cough on January 27, went to the hospital for a diagnosis of pneumonia due to shortness of breath on February 3, and was admitted to a negative pressure intensive care unit on the same day. He died of pneumonia with sepsis on the evening of February 15. With the consent of his family, his remains will be cremated in accordance with legal infectious disease regulations, and some specimens will be retained for further examination.

Commander Chen Shizhong said that the deceased man was a driver of a white card car and "probably carried passengers from Hong Kong, Macao, and Hong Kong." He has conducted a check on the communication record, hoping to fully grasp the contact history and find the exact source of infection.

Another new case was the brother of the above-mentioned deceased man in his 50s who was diagnosed after the test on February 15. He is currently asymptomatic and is admitted to a negative pressure isolation ward.

Authorities: Do not rule out possible community infection

Chen Shizhong said that on February 7th, a history of travel and related symptoms were needed for the inspection, but this case had no history of travel and was not in the scope of inspection at that time. The command center started on February 12 and conducted a COVID-19 virus test on January 31 for cases in which influenza was reported by the medical institutions in Taiwan and had severe influenza and negative influenza tests. As of February 15, a total of 113 specimens have been tested, and this case is the only one who tested positive.

He stated that there are four definitions of community communication. First, there must be a confirmed case and no source of infection can be found. The deceased currently meets this definition, but since the epidemic investigation has not been completed, it can be said that the possibility of community infection is not ruled out at this stage. The second definition is that community transmission is that the number of local cases is much higher than the number of overseas immigration cases, the third is that there have been one continuous transmission of ten or ten transmissions, and the fourth is widespread transmission.

Chen Shizhong said that the emergence of case 19 currently only meets the first definition. The latter three definitions do not match the current situation in Taiwan, but it can be said that there have been warnings. Therefore, we must complete the epidemic as soon as possible and provide more information. Revealed, hoping to find a clear source of infection. Chen Shizhong said that at this stage, personal protection recommendations, including hand hygiene and the timing of wearing a mask, are not enough to change. If a subsequent epidemic investigation finds that it is necessary to adjust the relevant policies for epidemic prevention, they will be announced immediately.

As of now, there have been 20 confirmed cases in Taiwan. In terms of global deaths, there were 1,665 deaths in the Mainland, and one in Hong Kong, the Philippines, Japan, France, and Taiwan.
