The junior fire brigade in Unterbrunn does not have personnel problems, but a waiting list. A visit to an exercise that the children didn't even know about.

Unterbrunn - The fire protection exercise in Unterbrunn is a surprise: When the six boys and three girls from the children's fire brigade come out of the fire station with their group leaders Rebecca Möcks and Alexandra Heb on a sunny Saturday afternoon, it smokes from the demolition house opposite the VR Bank. Alexander (10) immediately presses the red alarm button. "There was a fire opposite the Unterbrunner fire brigade, in the house on Hauptstrasse." His comrade Elias made this emergency call to the control center. "I don't know if there are people in it," Elias says. After that, the alarm siren will shrill.

An ambulance with paramedics that “happened” to be nearby is parked at the tool shed. Commandant Stefan Merkl was also “by accident” on site. Maximilian immediately discovers that it is an exercise: "I can see that on the cable," says the well-trained boy. With their group leaders, the girls and boys eagerly follow the further mission. The red vehicle moves out. Uniformed firefighters jump out of the car and roll out the hoses. There are also respiratory protection wearers. The children only stay at a safe distance, but are then allowed to come closer: the doors in the supposedly burning demolition house are locked. From the inside you can hear the crack of a broken wooden door. A fireman is already standing on the balcony. The respirator rescues the first fire victim, a dummy doll, via the ladder. There is another crash below. The second victim.

VR-Bank made the house available for the fire exercise

A group with families has already gathered in front of the fire station. The audience applauds the volunteer rescuers. "Each individual respirator wearer is recorded by name," Heb explains to the children. The firefighter monitors the pressure in the oxygen cylinders with the stopwatch. As soon as the residual pressure drops to 50 bar, the alarm goes off: The respiratory protection people who save people must then immediately leave the smoke-filled room, explains Commander Merkl.

"It's very exciting," says Moni, who lives right next to the fire station. Because the paramedic comes running with the water bottle. At the end of the exercise, the children can help roll up the hoses. Merkl is happy that the VR Bank has just made its house available: Because this Monday the demolition begins. The children receive certificates to crown the campaign. “I think it's important that the children don't just learn theory,” says educator Möcks.

No wonder that the Unterbrunn youth fire brigade has no concerns for young people. "We have a waiting list," emphasizes Heb. She has been leading the group with Möcks for a decade. The two women from Unterbrunn also took part in the guidelines for the children's fire brigade of the government of Upper Bavaria.
