A mangy fox recently caused a sensation in Sachsenried. The sick animal crept through the garden of local councilor Rudi Kögel, who photographed it.

  • The fox had probably been attracted to cat food.
  • The community is asking residents to refrain from feeding outdoors.
  • The hunters have the situation under control.

Sachsenried - "The fox looked like a hyena, " Rudi Kögel recently described to his colleagues in the Schwabsoier town council the terrible sight of the sick wild animal that had sneaked through his garden. Kögel suspects that the fox had been attracted by food that some people in the village provide for the stray cats. Kögel asked to stop this. Mayor Siegfried Neumann and the other councilors agreed to the request.

Jürgen Pache had also received the picture of the fox the day after the sighting. He is one of the responsible hunters in the Sachsenried community hunting area. Pache regrets that he hadn't heard of the mangy fox before. Then he would have come over with his dog, would have picked up the trail of the animal and possibly "saved the fox from his suffering", he says. But he couldn't have done that directly on site. In general, you shouldn't shoot between buildings, he emphasizes.

Mangy foxes are always on the lookout for food

The hunter is not surprised that the fox had come into town. Mangy foxes are always on the lookout for food because they constantly lose energy. The hunters should try to get them, Pache reports. But that was not so easy, because they would often hide under buildings. Last spring he experienced this directly at the hunting lodge. The hunting dog tracked down the sick fox, the hunters could redeem him.

Dogs can also get mange, but it is not fatal to them

According to Pache, the mange is not entirely harmless for the dogs either because the parasite can pass on to them. It is not fatal, "but we have to take the dog to the vet". According to the hunter, foxes do not necessarily die from the skin disease. With the animal in the garden of Rudi Kögel, however, the infestation is so severe that it will not survive, the expert says. Fortunately, the mite that causes mange does not generally spread to humans.

Sick fox in the garden luckily an isolated case

Fortunately, according to Pache, the sighting of the sick fox in Sachsenried is an isolated case. In the past ten months, only one sick animal has been killed in the area, a second has now been sighted. The hunters also make sure that the fox population does not become too large. Around 20 animals have been shot since spring 2019, the hunter reports.

In Steingaden there is an obviously injured deer in the ditch . The called hunter misses twice. A couple is angry about the incident.

Benjamin Boos from Schongau is angry. Every day the hobby shepherd picks up several bags of garbage from his pasture on the Bahnberg - a problem that affects the entire city wall environment, it says at the city nursery.
