Dominican Republic suspends municipal elections 3:21

(CNN Spanish) - The president of the Dominican Republic, Danilo Medina, went to the country to guarantee the support of the official institutions for the organization of new municipal elections on March 15.

The president called the population to peace and to maintain civilized coexistence in the current situation after the suspension of national elections this Sunday.

"It is time to rectify mistakes and move on," he said in his speech.

This Monday the Central Electoral Board informed that the new municipal elections will be in 27 days and the manual vote will be used, after massive failures in the automated system.

The political parties, including the official-PLD, said they were not consulted and that they learned about the new date through the press conference of the electoral body.

Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the electoral body, dressed in black as a symbol of mourning for Dominican democracy, dozens protested to demand the resignation of members of the electoral authority.

The Office of the Attorney General of the Republic informed that on Monday the technical body requested a technical report to proceed with an investigation.

Last Sunday, from early hours, technical problems were reported, a situation that caused delays in the opening of the electoral precincts of the 18 municipalities, which represent 62% of the voters, where the electronic vote was applied, according to figures of the Central Electoral Board.

In the remaining 140 municipalities the manual vote was used and no problem was presented.
