The parties of the whole political spectrum, except the extreme right, have agreed on this solution, reports on Tuesday the German press. The government of this landlocked region of the former GDR will be headed for 70 days by the conservative Christine Lieberknecht (CDU), the political parties have decided, including that of the far left Die Linke, who until 2019 headed Thuringia.

The new leader, surrounded by three ministers, will have the main task of preparing a new election. Lieberknecht, 61, already served as minister-president of Thuringia between 2009 and 2014, leading a coalition with the SPD social democrats.

On February 5, the election of the liberal Thomas Kemmerich (FDP) thanks to the votes of the CDU but also of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) had caused an earthquake in Germany. The liberal leader had to give up 24 hours later, plunging the institutions into paralysis.

This political crisis had repercussions up to the head of the CDU, Angela Merkel's runner-up, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, renouncing to target the chancellery in 2021, for lack of authority over her troops in Thuringia.
