Macron announces the end of teaching in foreign languages ​​Elco

Emmanuel Macron announced that the device of optional courses in foreign languages ​​given by teachers designated by the governments of other countries (Elco) will be abolished at the start of the school year.

“ The problem we have today with this device is that we have more and more teachers who do not speak French (...), that we have more and more teachers on whom National Education has no regard, "said Emmanuel Macron after a trip to Mulhouse devoted to the fight against" Islamist separatism ".

These Elco involve nine countries (Algeria, Croatia, Spain, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Serbia, Tunisia and Turkey) and " 80,000 students " per year, said the Head of State.

“ I am not comfortable with the idea of ​​having women and men in the school of the Republic who can teach without the National Education system being able to exercise any control. And neither do we have control over the programs they teach, ”he added. " We cannot teach things that are manifestly incompatible either with the laws of the Republic or with History as we see it, " he said. " From the start of the new school year in September 2020, teaching in languages ​​and culture of foreign origin will be suppressed everywhere on the soil of the Republic, " he announced.

Negotiations are underway " by the Ministers of National Education and Foreign Affairs " with the countries concerned to end this system, which will be replaced, for countries with which the government finds an agreement, by International Language Teaching foreign (EILE). These discussions were launched in 2016.
