The Hamburg Otto Group tried to protect the environment and the climate much earlier than other companies. Now the group wants to intensify its efforts again and no longer emit greenhouse gas in ten years.

Hamburg (dpa) - The trading and service group Otto wants to become climate neutral by 2030. The management board had spent this goal on the locations, transports, employee mobility and external data centers and cloud services, Otto said on Tuesday in Hamburg.

The Otto Group is taking its decades of systematic commitment to climate protection to a new level after it has managed to save 50 percent of the CO2 emissions in 2006.

In contrast to several other companies, Otto wants to achieve the goal without buying certificates to offset their own emissions elsewhere on a large scale. "From a climate protection and cost perspective, we always see compensation as the last resort in achieving our sustainability goals," said CEO Alexander Birken. Otto will expand renewable energies at its own locations and use 100 percent green electricity, if available.

When it comes to transport, the Otto Group wants to further reduce the share of air freight and is increasingly relying on electric mobility on the "last mile". The subsidiary Hermes will deliver the consignments in the 80 largest cities by 2025 without emissions. Intelligent transport and tour software should make the entire logistics and delivery more efficient. The Executive Board sees further potential for CO2 savings in the area of employee mobility through the increased use of trains instead of planes and a switch to electric mobility.
