The Unwrapped Initiative in Grafing wants to set up a so-called Food Coop. It's about buying food in large quantities together.

The Unwrapped Initiative in Grafing wants to set up a so-called Food Coop. It's about buying food in large quantities together.

Grafing - It all started with the idea that packaging is more important than content. Back then it was an idea of marketing strategists. This idea eventually led to a flood of packaging waste that has become a problem and pollutes the environment. That is why Grafing now has a completely different idea.

“Our goal is to set up a Foodcoop, in which we can order large quantities of food together with little packaging. The environmentally friendly and fair manufacture of the products is important to us, ”says Jule Iberl (43) from the“ Unpacked Group ”.

The project is part of a series of projects within the Transition Town Initiative Grafing. The active people are now looking for a room in which the goods ordered together can be stored. It should therefore have an electricity and water connection and be accessible without barriers "so that the suppliers can easily deliver the goods there with the trolley".

Looking for 30 square meters of space

The “goods accommodation” should be around 30 square meters, “but we haven't decided on that yet,” says Iberl. The group is still relatively fresh, the first meeting was only held in October last year. The range of goods is also still being discussed. The only thing that is certain is that it should be “healthy regional food”. "If possible from Germany," said Iberl. "Our members believe that you don't eat a mango at all," says the 43-year-old, referring to the avoidance of CO2.

The Grafinger players are in numerous companies, as a look at the website of the Federal Center for Nutrition shows. "There are currently over 3000 food coops in Germany, all of which work a little differently," is reported there. In most of these initiatives, “a group of people collectively order large quantities of food from the wholesaler and circumvent the retail trade. In this way, it can hand over the food to its members at cheaper prices, ”explains the Federal Center. This would "allow people on a small budget to enjoy sustainably produced and traded food".

Workshops and shopping guides are to follow

The Grafinger goals are, however, somewhat different. This includes “organizing workshops on issues related to plastic and waste prevention, dialogue with existing retailers to improve the range of unpackaged food and creating a shopping guide that lists which items are already unpacked where are available ". The topic of food sharing and food rescue should also play a role, as well as contacts to people who are already involved in this area. And there are also in the Ebersberg district. “The sparking spark” for the Grafinger project “sparked the announcement of the opening of a cooperative organized packaging shop in Zorneding”.

In search of a suitable storage space, the initiators from Grafing turned to the business development agency of the city of Tim Grebner. "A meeting should take place on Friday," reports Iberl. Anyone interested in participating or participating in the cooperation will soon have the opportunity to find out more. "The next dates for our meetings are Sunday, February 16, Wednesday, March 4, and Sunday, March 22, each at 7:00 p.m. in the Family and Citizens' Center at Münchner Strasse 12, in the back building (entrance from Kirchenstrasse ). "

Members should pick up ordered products themselves

And this is how it should work: After the goods have been delivered, members can pick up their ordered products themselves for two to three days. You can access the warehouse via a key safe with a combination of numbers. Now a suitable room has to be found. Maybe someone has a tip.
