If Germany wants to achieve its climate goals, more electric cars have to be on the road. Therefore, the federal government rewards the switch with more money. The industry also reaches into their pockets.

Berlin (dpa) - Buyers of electric cars now get significantly more money from the state. Since Wednesday, new purchase premiums have been applied to all vehicles that were registered after November 4, 2019 - for purely electric vehicles and for plug-in hybrids.

The federal government had already decided on the higher funding in its climate protection program last September. The subsequent proceedings involving the EU Commission dragged on. Brussels had only given the green light last week. The directive was published in the Federal Gazette on Tuesday.

The funding depends on the type of car and the list price. For battery-electric vehicles up to a list price of 40,000 euros, it increases from 4,000 to 6,000 euros. For cars with a list price of more than 40,000 euros, the grant will in future be 5,000 euros, a quarter higher than before. For plug-in hybrids under 40,000 euros, it is 4,500 euros (instead of 3000); with a list price of more than 40,000 euros, buyers get 3750 euros (instead of 3000). The money can also be applied for retrospectively.

Half of the industry participates in the so-called environmental bonus, the state pays the other half. Recently, there was talk of the higher premium costing billions. The federal government and industry each contributed 600 million euros to the purchase premium that had been valid until now. The new regulation is limited until the end of 2025.

The industry association VDA described the new premiums as "an important milestone for the desired ramp-up of electromobility". For the first time, the purchase premium can also be applied for young used electric cars under certain conditions. However, they may not have received government funding for the first purchase or as a company car. In addition, they must not have run more than 12 months or more than 15,000 kilometers. Then there is 5000 euros for used electric cars and 3750 euros for used hybrids.

At a peak meeting in November, the German government and auto industry agreed that the industry would continue to participate in the bonus. It was also agreed to expand the charging network for electric cars more quickly.

New registrations of electric cars are increasing, but they have not yet made a breakthrough on the mass market. Electromobility plays a central role in the federal government's climate protection program, which aims to achieve the 2030 climate goals. For this, a number of 7 to 10 million electric cars in Germany will be considered necessary by 2030.
