German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that she will not interfere in the process of selecting the candidate for Chancellor on behalf of the Christian Democratic Party. This is how the Russian news agency Interfax published Wednesday.
"I can only repeat what I said in October 2018 when I decided to give up the chancellor's post. I said I would not interfere with the question of who the next Christian-Democratic party leader would be and the chancellor's nominee. My historical experience shows that previous leaders should avoid it, so will I. "That doesn't mean I'm not having conversations with a potential candidate."
Recall that Merkel's successor to the party Angret Crump-Kernbauer renounced her candidacy for the party's nomination for chancellor following support from the party's representatives in a coalition with the Alternative for Germany party in the state of Thuringia.
This move was strongly condemned by Merkel and Crump-Kernbauer, but the latter's condemnation came under criticism that was among the factors that led her to forgo the candidacy.

Following her announcement, several party officials announced their candidacy: Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Norbert Riotgen, former chairman of the Bundestag Christian Democratic Party's Frederick March, North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Lashette Prime Minister and Health Minister Yines Shpan.

So far, none of them have officially stated their plans and at this time there are internal contacts within the party. The candidates for the chancellor position are usually the chairmen of the major Christian, Democratic and Social Democratic parties in the German parliamentary election, the Bundestag.
The elected Chancellor is the party's candidate who received the most votes and the President's recommendation. The next election will take place in Germany in the fall of 2021.
