According to some reports, the father, Rowan Baxter, set fire to the car. His wife, Hannah, died in hospital after suffering severe burns. According to eyewitnesses, she jumped out of the car screaming: "He spills fuel on me." He was also reported to have been located near the car suffering from self-stab wounds. "This is a very early stage in the investigation, but the vehicle went up in flames completely upon police arrival," said Police Chief Mark Thompson, adding that it was one of the most frightening arenas he had ever seen. Police said Hannah, 31, was driving the car, while Rowan, 42, was sitting next to her. She was critically evacuated to the city hospital and died of her wounds later in the day. "It is still unclear how the fire broke out, so deciding whether it was a suicide or tragic accident would not be appropriate at this time," the police chief emphasized.
Australia's Parliament has been updated by the Queensland State Police Secretary for details of the "appalling incident" and Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he is participating in family and community grief, praising the emergency response from the "shake-up scene".
