Last spring, janitor Chas Pyle found while fixing one of the North Canton school lockers in Ohio a red dusty bag. After opening it to inspect its contents, he discovered that it had belonged to a student who had lost it in 1957, Patty Runfola. The bag had been hidden between the lockers and the wall for decades.
The news of the finding aroused great interest in the local community that collaborated for months to locate the owner or her family. Last week the school announced that thanks to social networks the search had paid off and that the descendants of Runfola, who died in 2003, had been located. The family had also agreed to share their story and some photos of the objects found.
Rumfola was 15 when he lost his bag in 1957 and the items found in his wallet reflect the daily life of an American teenager of the fifties. There are several writing tools like pencils and gums. In addition to makeup, a comb, photographs, chewing gum, calendars or the local library card.
Several coins were also found that his five children decided to distribute to remember his mother. Runfola graduated in 1960 and married in 1980. She worked for decades as a teacher in a school and was one of the founders of the Theater Arts Guild and the Young Women Club of Punxsutawney.
