40 years after the events, which occurred on 22 February 1980, the murder of Valerio Verbano, a left-wing militant killed at home in the Montesacro district in Rome, may not have been guilty. (HANDLE)

Next Saturday four years will have passed since the murder of Valerio Verbano, the young leftist militant killed in his home in Montesacro, Rome. A death occurred for an "exclusively political" motive in the dramatic years of lead but at the hands of someone who will remain unknown.

The Prosecutor asked for the filing of the proceeding which had been reopened in 2011 on the events of February 22, 1980. The new preliminary investigation did not gather enough elements to proceed with entries in the register of suspects. The prosecutor Erminio Amelio could not help but request the archiving. A conclusion which, however, the heirs of Verbano opposed, who through the lawyer Flavio Rossi Albertini made an opposition and the court fixed the council chamber before the investigating magistrate for April 17 next.

In the filing request, the Prosecutor's Office queues up the pieces collected in these years and arrives at some certainties. "The matrix of those who carried out the murder is undoubtedly terrorist. The death blitz was carried out by three people who entered Verbano's house tied the parents and waited for the boy to return home, who was hit with a gunshot that reached him in the back. "Small steps in the reconstruction of the story have been made", writes the prosecutor in the provision adding that during the new investigation tranche "strong suspicions emerged on two or three subjects, indicated as possible authors". These are presumably people who gravitated around far-right groups such as Third Position and Nar.

For the Prosecutor of Rome, however, the events of Montesacro represent "a real punitive action carried out by subjects certainly belonging to fringes of right-wing terrorism, in particular of formations and / or subjects gravitating in the Talenti neighborhoods". For the prosecutors in Piazzale Clodio it was a "well organized and premeditated terrorist attack to respond to previous attacks suffered by members of right-wing groups, which was then followed by the murder of Angelo Mancia". Behind the blitz, which ended tragically, there would have been an attempt to "acquire documentary and photographic material from the victim, together with the names of those who had helped Verbano to know the names of the subjects who gravitated to the area of the right in the neighborhood".
