(CNN Spanish) - A Mexican in custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) died Thursday at a hospital in the city of Youngstown, Ohio, the agency confirmed in a press release published this Friday.

ICE said it’s 34-year-old David Hernández Colula. The statement said he was taken to Mercy Health-St. Elizabeth Youngstown, after he was found unconscious in his cell at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center. Doctors declared his death at 1:49 a.m. local time.

According to the agency, the efforts of the correctional and emergency personnel to revive him were unsuccessful and the preliminary cause of death would have been an attempted suicide, although they clarified that the case is under investigation.

"ICE is firmly committed to the health and well-being of all those in custody and performs a comprehensive review of this incident throughout the agency," the statement said.

The agency said it notified the Mexican consulate and relatives of Hernández Colula.

Hernández Colula had been detained since December last year. He is the seventh person in ICE custody who has died since October. During the fiscal year of 2019, there were eight immigrants who died when they were in the hands of the agency.
