Beijing / Yokohama (dpa) - The number of deaths caused by the novel corona virus is increasing steadily. In China, 118 patients died again within a day.

More than a dozen returnees from the metropolis Wuhan in central China, severely affected by the lung disease, are expected in Stuttgart on Friday. German passengers on the cruise ships "Diamond Princess" in Japan and "Westerdam" in Cambodia also fly home. Fearing the spread of the pathogen in Iran, Iraq closed its border with the neighboring country. Around 1200 infections and 11 deaths have been counted in more than two dozen countries.

In mainland China, the number of infections detected rose by 889 to 75,465 cases by Friday, the health commission in Beijing said. However, experts expect a much higher number of unreported cases. With the new deaths, 2236 dead are officially sued in the People's Republic. Just under half of the new infections with the Sars-CoV-2 virus were reported from the province of Hubei, in whose capital Wuhan the epidemic had started. There are already 271 virus cases in the provinces of the province, as Hubeis Health Commission reported for the first time.

The rise in all new infections was lower for the second day in a row after China changed the way of counting again. For example, clinical diagnoses of Covid-19 lung disease in Hubei are no longer counted. In future, the infection will have to be confirmed by a DNA test in the laboratory. The province had only started counting diagnoses last week based on factors such as pulmonary images, physical condition and history. Experts had complained that the DNA tests were often incorrect and that infections were not detected.

After a new European return campaign from Wuhan, more than a dozen returnees are expected to arrive in Stuttgart on Friday. First you come to Paris with other Europeans in a French plane. After arriving at Stuttgart Airport in the morning, the travelers should first be examined and then taken to a quarantine station in the Esslingen district.

Six passengers from Germany who were still on the "Diamond Princess" in Yokohama fly with other Europeans to Berlin in an Italian plane. As the German press agency in Tokyo learned, the departure is scheduled for Friday 10 p.m. local time (2 p.m. CET). The ship had been quarantined for two weeks. A German couple from Hesse had tested positive and is in hospital in Japan. Another German and his Japanese wife from Munich still want to stay in Tokyo.

The aircraft is said to land in the military part of Tegel Airport. There are also two Berliners on board, said health senator Dilek Kalayci. It is planned to isolate them at home for 14 days. Those who do not live in the federal capital will therefore first be brought to their hometowns by DRK employees.

After 717 passengers had left the ship in Yokohama on the two previous days, another 450 people are said to be on board on Friday, according to the Japanese TV channel NHK. Two infected Japanese senior citizens had died the previous day. Infections were found in 634 of the approximately 3700 passengers and crew members. They are looked after in clinics. Those who have had contact with the infected must remain on board for the time being.

Accompanied by riots, dozens of Ukrainians from Wuhan arrived in a quarantine station in central Ukraine on Thursday. On the way there, several windows of the buses were thrown in, as live pictures on television showed. The police also had to clear a burning barricade. Nine police officers and a civilian would have needed medical attention afterwards. Hundreds of people had demonstrated against returning for fear of the new Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus. They were partially armed with iron bars. Stones flew.

In the meantime, the all-clear was given: According to the holidaymakers, the tests for the virus on the 747 crew members of the cruise ship "Westerdam" remaining on board were also negative, as the shipping company Holland America Line announced. Except for an American on the way home, the virus has so far not been detected on board. Last week, 57 Germans had landed in Cambodia with the ship after several days of wandering. Some have already returned and are in quarantine at home. Others flew back on Friday.

Iraq closed its border with the neighboring country for fear of the spillover of the lung disease, which has now also been proven in Iran. Iranians should no longer cross the crossings. Iraqis arriving from the Islamic Republic will undergo tests, the Iraqi border agency said. State-of-the-art airline Iraqi Airways has also suspended its connections to Iranian destinations, according to Iraqi media reports.

The background to this is two deaths in the Iranian city of Qom attributed to the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen - the first reported infections in the country. The older men are said not to have been outside the city and not been in contact with Chinese tourists. The extent of possible infections in Iran is unclear.

Given the rapid rise in infections in South Korea, President Moon Jae In spoke of a "serious situation". He announced "quick and strong" countermeasures. According to the authorities, 52 new cases were added overnight. The number of infections in South Korea rose to 156. The previous day, the first death in South Korea was reported - a 63-year-old man in southeastern Cheongdo.
