The FATF took the unusual step after the Ayatollah regime refrained from adopting international treaty on terrorist financing • Now more than 200 countries will be required to impose effective sanctions on Iran

  • The FATF conference in Paris

Today, at the conclusion of the FATF, the International Money Laundering and Terrorism Task Force in Paris, the organization issued a public statement calling for world countries to impose effective economic sanctions on Iran.

In addition, the organization conducted an intelligence update on ISIS and Al Qaeda's funding channels, discussing the implementation of the virtual property sector regulation, publishing a digital identification guide and adding a host of countries to the "gray list".

After Iran refrained from adopting international treaty on terrorist financing, the organization today decided to move it to the "black list", which calls for all countries of the world to take effective financial preventive measures to protect the global economy from the terrorist financing and capital laundering risks posed by the Iranian regime. The blacklist now includes only North Korea, and the current decision will place Iran in a position similar to that of North Korea in terms of the global economy.

The organization's decision comes after several years of contacts between the organization and Iran, when in 2016 Iran pledged to improve its anti-money laundering and terrorist financing regime and was suspended from the organization's blacklist. Iran failed to meet these commitments, even after several lengths. Therefore, in recent months, the organization has undergone a gradual repatriation process of financial sanctions, and that has not caused it to change - it has now announced the cancellation of Iran's suspension and inclusion in the "blacklist".

This means that over 200 countries and territories that obey the rules of the organization will now be required to apply effective financial sanctions on Iran as a countermeasure, in addition to providing instructions to financial sector entities to apply increased oversight to Iranian financial institutions operating against them.

The organization's decisions are made by consensus, and the severe decision taken by Iran in this organization underlines the global recognition that the Iranian regime, which does not comply with international requirements, poses a danger to the global economy.

The Israeli delegation to the organization is led by representatives of the Money Laundering and Terrorist Prohibition Authority in the Ministry of Justice, led by Dr. Shlomit Wagman-Ratner; this week's meeting was also attended by the Tax Authority and Foreign Ministry representative. This is the first FATF meeting hosted by Dr. Shlomit Wagman-Ratner In a leading position in the organization, as chairman of the operative working group of the organization. This is the first appointment of an Israeli representative in this important international organization.

Dr. Shlomit Wagman-Ratner, Head of the Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Authority and the head of the Israeli delegation to the FATF: "We are proud to participate in the important and significant activity of this important organization, which serves as the gatekeeper of the global economy and acts with great determination on this issue, denouncing countries That do not meet the required conditions and do not correct the deficiencies. Today's decision to call on world countries to impose effective economic sanctions on Iran represents an important and courageous decision, demonstrating the organisation's professionalism and determination to fight global terrorist financing risks.

"I thank the dedicated authority staff, and the coordinator of the International Division's delegation, headed by Adv. Elad Vader, for their significant contribution to Israel's excellent professional activities in the organization, which is highly regarded internationally."
