The former Hotel Bastenhaus in Tegernsee was supposed to serve as a refugee home since June 2016. But it is still empty. The conversion work is finally beginning.

Tegernsee - The renovation work on the Hotel Bastenhaus has started. Refugees are expected to move in there in the second half of the year. The house offers space for 40 to 50 people, spokesman Birger Nemitz announced. It should be the last act of a tragedy that also deals with the taxpayers' association. He had checked again just last week.

If everything had gone according to plan, refugees would have been living in the former hotel since June 2016. On February 10, 2016, the district office on behalf of the Free State of Bavaria signed a rental agreement with Bastenhaus GbR. It is valid for ten years and sets a rental price of 10,000 euros per month. The hotel was still in operation at the time. For the Free State, the conclusion of the contract seemed to be a stroke of luck: at that time, what the district gymnasium in Tegernsee occupied with refugees, the suffering was great.

Years of delay after the contract was signed

But the hope that the hotel, which had just been closed, could be used as a refugee district without much effort was quickly dashed. On the one hand, the city of Tegernsee wanted to ensure legally that the use of the hotel was preserved and that no condominiums could be built there. On the other hand, it became clear that a lot has to be invested in fire protection. The district administration tried to prematurely dissolve the contract with the Bastenhaus GbR - consisting of a medical doctor from Weiden and a man from Munich. However, the two had no interest in it. Thus, the Free State has been paying rent for an unused house for four years.

Flammable material is disposed of

The conversion work can finally begin. A container was set up in which fire-hazardous material is disposed of. The ceiling cladding from the 1970s, for example, ends up there, as Nemitz reports. The planning of the conversion took a lot of time, the implementation is expensive. Last year there was talk of costs of 345,000 euros. Nemitz is currently unable to state any amount. With an old house you are never safe from surprises, he says. No sum can be said before the settlement.

Total costs have not yet been determined

Nemitz has also communicated this to the taxpayers' association, which in the most recent letter asked about the amount of the total costs and a possible increase in costs.

Despite all the capers, the district office is convinced that the cost-benefit ratio of the accommodation is good. Air-supported halls, for example, are much more expensive, Nemitz recalls. The conversion and the monthly rent do not burden the district budget. The Free State assumes these costs.

40 to 50 refugees are expected to move in in the second half of the year

The government of Upper Bavaria is also responsible for billeting. So-called contingent refugees are moving into the Bastenhaus, as Nemitz explains. Means: Tegernsee thus fulfills the requirement, based on the number of inhabitants, of how many asylum seekers are to be accepted. The residents of the shared accommodation should not stay permanently, but only for the duration of their asylum procedure. The Free State also employs a supervisor and takes care of the security service.
