Schwabsoien– It's the last few meters. The final sprint of the Schwabsoien carnival parade. In the last curve after the town hall it happens: The left side wall of the moving car of the "Birkländer Hütte" gives way. Boards and people fall on the street. Shock and Awe.
The security service, which is well represented, acts quickly. Because the situation is unclear, the fire brigade is called in to help. This seals off the moving visitors with a flutter tape and takes the injured to the paramedics.
Mood between anger and bewilderment
The piles of broken glass on the street are also quickly disposed of. Likewise, the components that the Birkländer pack onto the car in no time at all. The mood up there fluctuates between anger and bewilderment. "We have been there for 15 years, nothing has ever happened," explains Michael Staltmayr when asked by the Schongauer Nachrichten.
He is in charge - all the worse for someone who has observed everything there is to be observed: The car has been approved by the TÜV. There is a sign on the back, as prescribed: "Enter at your own risk". Everything done right. And yet everything went wrong that day. This may be due to the fact that the "Birkländer Hütte" has expanded the table this year, which normally serves as a seat in the cozy car with a barbecue area. "We wanted more people to ride with us."
And as it is: everyone brings one with them. And maybe he'll bring one with him. And then the hut is packed. "There are ten of us when assembling, sometimes 15, so everyone wants to ride."
And because young people are hard to brake in the mood to celebrate, they are pushed and pushed. At some point, even the material approved by the TÜV will give way. Some who fall off the car get away with cuts from screws and broken glass, a young woman breaks her hand.
Those responsible take consequences
Michael Staltmayr emphasizes: "If something worse had happened, it would have been." No more fun, no more carnival wagons. In a few hours, the committed car builders from Birkland got their moving car ready for use again on Saturday and reinforced the side walls. But not without taking its consequences: During the carnival parade in Peißenberg, where the "Birkländer Hütte" was part of the party this Sunday, there was a kind of "bouncer" at the car entrance. This regulated the admission - and not according to appearance, but according to the feasible amount of masker on the car.
