The resignation of the candidate for mayor of Paris Benjamin Griveaux for the filtering of a video of sexual content is the latest episode of a growing phenomenon that combines one of the most intimate spheres, sexuality, with the use of new technologies and blackmail . But the practical consequences of the most media cases - in Spain the most recent is that of the former coach of Malaga Víctor Sánchez, dismissed after the dissemination of a video with which he was being blackmailed - also place the focus on a dangerous introduction of a puritanism traditionally little extended in societies like the French or the Spanish.
While not constituting a crime, each one is free to watch, record and send whatever they want to those they deem appropriate. It is true that one should be aware that all devices nowadays have a camera that can be hacked, as well as the contents that are sent. Or that once the content has been voluntarily sent, it is no longer possible to control on what other screens it will end.
The proliferation of the so-called pornovenganza of which women tend to be victims, mainly, the dissemination of images of sexual content recorded consentingly during the existence of a relationship, but disseminated finished to cause harm, is an example. On the other hand, the management that each victim makes of the illegal dissemination of these contents corresponds to the personal sphere, but many factors influence and one very important is the social response, which can lead to tragic consequences.
Puritanism and morals are not the same. The first invades the public sphere with a keen aim and is only successful if it finds a positive reception in society. But if it is clear that the private sphere, within the law, is an area of strict freedom, it cannot be used as a weapon to destroy careers and lives.
