(CNN) - Nine people died and 37 were injured in eastern Turkey after a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck a border area with Iran on Sunday, Turkey's Health Minister Fahrettin Koca reported on Twitter.
The earthquake shook early Sunday and the epicenter was the city of Khoy, northwest of Iran, near the Turkish border, according to Iran's state news agency IRNA.
Thirty people in that region were injured, IRNA said.
"Seven aftershocks shook the area afterwards," IRNA said, citing the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of the University of Tehran.
