This man, aged according to a medical source, is the first officially announced case in Iraq, a country with a completely dilapidated health system which welcomes on its soil many pilgrims and students of religion from Iran. This neighboring country is on the front line against coronavirus, with the highest number of death cases outside China, twelve identified so far.

Iraq, worried about the deaths in Iran and the announcement of a first contamination in Kuwait, also close, closed its border in the east with the two countries. The country also banned travel to and from Iran on Thursday, but Najaf provincial health authority said in a statement on Monday that the first Iraqi patient had entered "before the entry ban was passed against the Iranians ”.

In Iran, most of the latest contamination has taken place in Qom, a holy city 150 km south of Tehran that is of particular importance to the Shiites, a community strongly represented in Lebanon, Iraq and Kuwait, which fuels the psychosis in Iraq. The Iraqis had already worried about the spread of the new coronavirus in China, a country in which several oil companies operate with their personnel in Iraq. While the death toll in China is around 2,600 dead, the entry of any foreigner from China has been prohibited in Iraq. Iraqis are all the more worried that their country is in chronic shortage of medicines and has less than 10 doctors per 10,000 inhabitants, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
