Renault Twingo ZE, in the electric arena

2020-02-24T12:39:05.758Z

NEW - At Renault, realism won: its city car finally converts to 100% electric propulsion.

By installing an electric motor under the hood of the Twingo, Renault puts an end to an anomaly. In order not to overshadow the Zoé, the Boulogne firm had so far refused to market an electric version of its city car when the technology had been planned from its conception. The Smart Forfour, its cousin with whom it shares the same platform, is therefore only offered in a 100% electric version. To accelerate the electric mix of its range, Renault has therefore decided to take advantage of the Twingo. The installation of the lithium-ion battery housed in the front part of the passenger compartment base does not therefore affect the interior space and the boot space (174 liters).

The instrumentation has been slightly modified to adapt to electrical technology. Renault

On the other hand, the accumulators have a capacity greater than that of its German cousin, 21.3 kWh instead of 17.6 kWh. This has an impact on the range that Renault announces at 180 km (WLTP cycle), while taking care to specify that it is a value for the summer. In winter, with heating and lights, the range would not exceed 110 km. The battery powers a synchronous, wound rotor electric motor with a power of 60 kW (82 hp) and a torque of 160 Nm. If the top speed is limited to 135 km / h to preserve autonomy, the Twingo ZE stands out with good vigor at start-up. The 50 km / h are reached in 4 seconds. To delay the passage to the charging station, the Twingo ZE benefits from a B mode, a virtual regenerative braking operating on three levels. The last level avoids applying the brake pedal in most situations. An Eco mode limiting the speed to 100 km / h will allow the 200 km range to be exceeded. The battery allows an optimized charge on the terminals in alternating current (AC) up to 22 kW. In this case, it would take 30 minutes, according to Renault, to recover 80 kilometers of autonomy. On a domestic outlet, the charging time is 13 hours 30 minutes, 8 hours on a 3.7 kW wallbox, 4 hours on a 7.4 kW wallbox. Finally, on a three-phase 11 kW terminal, the waiting time drops to 2 hours 10.

The electric motor is installed at the rear; the battery under the front seats. Renault

The Twingo ZE will go on sale at the end of the year. Communicated at the next Paris fair, the price should be slightly lower than that of the Smart Forfour EQ (from € 27,350).
