Fabian von Xylander wants to become mayor of Dietramszell. He is a candidate for the Greens, SPD and party-free. His way there was a little unusual.

Dietramszell - "Mayor wanted - non-partisan, committed, competent." At the end of November, the Dietramszell Greens tried to find a suitable candidate for the office of community leader. Fabian von Xylander undoubtedly has sufficient political experience. He was a member of the Dietramszell municipal council from 1984 to 2008, was a district councilor for 18 years and has been a research assistant in the Bundestag for 13 years. Only: He has been living in Berlin since 2008. He considers that the fact sheet has reached him there as a hint of fate.

A friend from the old homeland told him about it shortly before Christmas - "actually only as a gag, without any ulterior motives," says von Xylander and shoves a piece of Kaiserschmarrn onto his fork. He pauses thoughtfully for a moment, as if he still can't quite grasp the sudden turn in his life. "In the evening it started to work in me." In a sleepless night he realized: "This is the opportunity to do what I always enjoyed." Because party politics was never his , he says. Despite sometimes violent arguments, he always loved the much more practical and concrete work in the local council. And the homeland anyway: "The scenic beauty, the rural character of the community, must be preserved."

"Dahoam was always Erlach for me", he is aware today. He grew up here, his son was born here, his parents and grandparents are buried in the cemetery next door. His children Anna (22) and Yannick (18) spent the majority of their childhood in the small village on the eastern edge of the municipality. Von Xylander is still a member of the Baiernrain volunteer fire brigade.

As a 20-year-old, during his community service in Miesbach and Munich, he joined the SPD in 1980. Three years later he founded the local association Dietramszell / Egling with ten other members. Already in the next local elections he moved into the municipal council - with the same cross-party list of SPD, Greens and party-free, for which he is now running for mayor. “We had a lot going on back then,” he recalls. For example, that three-year-olds were allowed to go to kindergarten and that the public was no longer excluded from many meetings with flimsy reasons.

In 1988 he founded the Dietramszell-Baignes partnership association, the chairman of which he remained for 20 years. He financed his living through music lessons for zither and dulcimer. It was only in "third priority", as he admits, that he studied law in Munich - which is why he broke off at some point. "I have the luxury of doing what is important to me," he says. That was also the case for his move to Berlin, where he "was finally able to work full-time in politics". At the same time, he studied social management there.

At the moment, the 59-year-old is a commuter between two worlds. On the one hand, city flair and federal politics, his partner in Berlin and the child they want to be born at the end of April. In between long train journeys, election events in the different districts of Dietramszell, the old friends and acquaintances, a room in the Baiernrain inn. "I like both," he explains. The job in Berlin is still fun for him. "But the candidacy is a matter close to the heart," von Xylander openly admits. His partner, too, can now imagine starting a new life in Dietramszell.

Von Xylander's house in Erlach sold a few years ago. But part of the property still belongs to him. He would like to build a new house there. Until then, he hopes to find something to rent - if the Dietramszeller elects him as their new mayor in March.

Questions after questions

Favorite place in your community?

The Jasberg - because of the view. And the hills around Dietramszell, if you only see the top of the church tower from the monastery church.

Brass music or rock / pop?

Brass music - but even more classical and parlor music.

When was the last time you were in costume?

Never according to the (strict) rules of the traditional costumes clubs. Gladly with a jacket or traditional suit. But never in pseudo-costume.

Do you like pets?

Yes. We had a dog for a long time.

Order fan or easy going?

All in all probably a bit relaxed, but basic rules should always apply.

Beer lover or wine lover?

It mainly depends on the society in which I am currently.

Beach vacation or city break?

If I had to choose: city break. But a few nice days on the French Atlantic or Corsica are also very nice.

Resentful or forgiving?

Ultimately, more forgiving. I often find it much more important and interesting to find out why someone acts and decides this way.

Three things for the island?

Good music. Good books. My family and my best friends.

Pork knuckle or vegetable casserole?

Schweinshaxn - quite a reason for a return to Dietramszell.

Severe or good-natured as a boss or father?

Hopefully rather good-natured, but basic rules ... (see above).

Do you have a role model?

Not really one. But in politics I have the greatest respect for Willy Brandt - for his efforts for democracy, reconciliation and peace - and Dr. Hans-Jochen Vogel - because of his hard work, his correctness and his sense of justice, for example in land policy.

Your motto?

In order to really preserve something, you always have to change something.

In addition to Fabian von Xylander, Josef Hauser and Ludwig Gröbmaier apply for the mayor's office in Dietramszell.
