A year after the death of Karl Lagerfeld, the legacy of the German designer is still very much alive and has become a tangible presence in both fashion and popular culture. The environment closest to the one known as the fashion kaiser seems to have not yet overcome the duel for its loss. This is transmitted at least by Baptiste Giabiconi, the man who was next to Lagerfeld for the last 10 years of his life and who claims to be the main heir of the fashion star. “There are seven heirs of Karl Lagerfeld. In the list, I am the first one ”, he revealed in an interview on the Sept à Huit program , on the French channel TF1.

The model also details that Choupette, the famous and millionaire designer cat, follows the care of Françoise, her housekeeper and, as was already known, has also confirmed that she is one of the heirs of the dressmaker's legacy.

In the interview, which he has done on the occasion of the launch of his book in which he speaks in depth about his union with Lagerfeld, Giabiconi has given details of the ambiguous relationship he had for years with the designer. Karl Lagerfeld considered Baptiste Giabiconi as his spiritual son although he was something else, a couple with whom he lived a discreet relationship. Mannequin by profession, Giabiconi was 19 when he became the designer's fetish model and the man who accompanied him everywhere. Giabiconi, who made his debut at Couture SS 2009, took a stellar place in the Chanel parades and was responsible for closing the maison shows during the following years.

According to Giabiconi, it was his “spontaneity” and his “freshness” that conquered Lagerfeld. "The fact of not having a code," he tells on French television. “Often, we hugged. It was a filial relationship, very powerful, with a love we could not describe, ”explains the main heir of Lagerfeld, whom he affectionately called“ my Karl, my little Karl and sometimes my love ”. "There was never any shadow of ambiguity between us," he admits.

The complicity in their relationship was reflected, he says, in their constant discussions and debates. "We could tell each other everything," he recalls and adds that the fashion emperor "hated discussions about intellectuals." In addition to those moments, purchases also occupied important moments in their lives. “Karl was excessive in everything. We went to Colette, to Dior ... I wanted to satisfy myself. (...) He said: 'there is only for the scoundrel'. A scoundrel who filled that void, that loneliness, ”he says.

Although the link between the two men remains indefinable, what is certain is that Lagerfeld came to think of adopting Baptiste Giabiconi. “He wanted his son to be one way or another. I wanted to protect myself, ”says the model. A protection that included not informing him of his illness, a cancer that ended his life on February 19, 2019, at age 85. “He camouflaged himself a lot, he never talked about it, he didn't want to… he turned his chemotherapy sessions into acupuncture sessions. I understood. I respected his choice of not wanting to talk about it, ”explains the model about the designer's excuses when he received chemotherapy.

Baptiste Giabiconi, now 30, was not a stranger in the world of fashion but his work and personal union with the German designer was a qualitative leap in his career. “It's the male version of Gisele Bündchen. Well with clothes and, even more, without her, ”Lagerfeld said of him on occasion. The model thus defined his connection with the designer: "Karl can awaken in me a feminine side without having the feeling that my masculinity is affected."

A year after his death, Baptiste Giabiconi continues to remember him. “What I miss is not being able to call him. It was wonderful to have shared more than 10 years by his side, ”he concludes.
