It has a long tradition: the Geretsried Urzeln storm the town hall for carnival. Then we went to the colorful carnival goings on Karl-Lederer-Platz.

Geretsried– For a moment it looked as if Mayor Michael Müller was going to drop his jaw. 56 noisy Urzeln stood on Shrove Tuesday in front of the town hall door. Traditionally, the dressed Transylvanian Saxons asked for admission. Their goal: to drive away evil spirits and to accompany the mayor to the carnival goings out on Karl-Lederer-Platz. In fact, Müller hadn't been scared at all. Only his glued beard had come off - to the delight of the guests. Müller welcomed his guests with the words "Carnival without Urzeln would not be carnival". The 50-year-old said that he was happy that this tradition existed.

Müller was a little scared when Vanessa Maurus and Maria Wagner positioned themselves in the middle of the small meeting room. The 23- and 16-year-olds presented a feat that symbolized the Fassbinder guild: the women twirled two large rings through the air to the beat of the music. Three small wine glasses were stacked inside each. "I don't always have to be in the front row," explained Müller, taking himself to safety. His worry was unfounded: All six glasses kept up with the Wolfratshauser Stadtkapelle.

The primeval tents then streamed onto Karl-Lederer-Platz under the ringing of cowbells. The noise caused a sensation - within a few minutes the area filled with curious people. The Ring family in Königsdorf, for example, had given up carnival at home in favor of Geretsried. "It was worth it," said Papa Florian, satisfied. Meanwhile, his five-year-old son Lukas watched the Urzeln spellbound.

After the end of a dance, guild master Peter Wagner said goodbye: "Some stations are still waiting for us." The 47-year-old visits the Urzelgruppe every year in seven restaurants, old people's homes, the Red Cross and other institutions. That is why City Councilor Müller took over the moderation - suitably in the costume of a test picture. "It used to be broadcast on television after the program ended," said the mayor. At that time it was used to adjust the sharpness of the TV. "A little visual acuity can never hurt even in carnival," joked the mayor. nap
