Placido Domingo faces new allegations of harassment

(CNN) - The American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA) published a press release Monday night stating that the investigation on Plácido Domingo concluded that he “in fact, got involved in inappropriate activities, ranging from flirting to sexual advances, inside and outside the workplace ”.

The AGMA report also found that “many of the witnesses expressed fear of reprisals in the industry as their reason for not showing up before. The AGMA board of governors has accepted the results of the report and will take appropriate measures. ”

The AGMA announced last year that it had opened an investigation against the famous opera singer after several women reported sexual and verbal harassment. Domingo, at that time, denied the accusations and said they were "plagued with inconsistencies."

Placido Domingo's response

On Monday night, in response to AGMA's findings, Domingo issued a statement in the Los Angeles Times, apologizing for his behavior.

“I have taken the time during the last months to reflect on the accusations that several colleagues of mine have made against me. I respect that these women finally felt comfortable enough to talk, and I want them to know that I really regret the harm I caused them, ”said Domingo.

“I accept full responsibility for my actions, and I have grown from this experience. Now I understand that some women may have been afraid to express themselves honestly because of the concern that their careers would be adversely affected if they did. While that was never my intention, nobody should be made to feel that way. ”

In October 2019, the legendary tenor and conductor resigned from his position as general director of the Los Angeles Opera, amidst the multiple allegations raised against him about sexual misconduct.

The Associated Press agency reported last August that nine women detailed incidents of sexual harassment possibly occurring over three decades, beginning in the 1980s. In September, 11 more women made their complaints public, including allegations of verbal harassment and groping.

By this same scandal, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the San Francisco Opera had already canceled the artist's performances. Domingo also gave up his performances at the New York Metropolitan Opera for this scandal.
