(CNN Spanish) - Paraguay's health authorities announced Wednesday that the country is on “maximum alert” after confirmation of a case of coronavirus in Brazil.

The director of Health Surveillance, Guillermo Sequera, said it is a matter of days, weeks or months for the virus to enter; Although they try to avoid it, their presence is probably going to happen in the country, sooner or later, taking into account that it already exists at the regional level, he added.

At a press conference on Wednesday, the Minister of Health, Julio Mazzoleni, said that in Paraguay they have an observation of a citizen who was in China on suspicion that he contracted the coronavirus. The first analysis of this person was negative but still isolated as a precaution, authorities said.

In January, there was a similar case that was finally ruled out.

As for special controls at the airport, the Paraguay authorities follow the protocol of the World Health Organization.

According to Sequera, even “stricter than in neighboring countries” measures are being carried out since not only people with symptoms are isolated, but all passengers arriving from China and from countries where there are cases of infection from person to person.

Until now, the passenger control system that arrives in the country is based on “self-report” since according to the airport authorities, internationally, there is still no access to information about passengers and their flights of origin. It is only possible to track up to the last two connections by the system used worldwide.

According to health authorities there is no special budget allocated to the coronavirus. Paraguay is currently facing a dengue health emergency, which allows the government to use funds at its discretion to deal with it. This year 20 people died from dengue in the country, according to official figures and there are more than 80 deaths under study that could have been caused by the disease.

They also reported that as preventive measures two military units were put into operation in the vicinity of the Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, in the case of the isolation of people who could carry the coronavirus being necessary.
