The Old Republic is over, Star Wars enters a new era

2020-02-26T17:54:07.259Z

Announced by Lucasfilm, novels and comics from The High Republic will introduce new stories taking place 200 years before the events of The Phantom Menace.

The Force in its most beautiful form. Lucasfilm has unveiled, through the trailer below, the exploration of a new era in the Star Wars universe. Entitled The High Republic , this period of the "extended universe" of Georges Lucas takes place 200 years before the events of the film Star Wars: The Phantom Menace .

Previously known as " Project Luminous ", this new era will be illustrated by several stories, all starting from an even mysterious event called " The Great Disaster ". At the height of the Republic's golden age, the Jedi order maintains peace in the galaxy. But the Nihil, described as " space vikings ", intend to complicate the task of the knights. In this galactic “far west” , the intrigues will exploit different facets of the universe and will question the fears of the Jedi.

James Waugh, vice president of content and strategy at Lucasfilm, confirms that the Jedi, between " knights of the round table " and " Texas Rangers ", will not be the only characters in the works. Whether smugglers, villains or bounty hunters, new protagonists will also be at the center of the stories.

The authors, gathered at the Skywalker Ranch for several weeks to outline the outline of the project, specify that the entire audience is targeted. Adults, teenagers and children will find their account with stories specific to their audience. These stories will be interconnected, no matter what the formats.

The High Republic will see its first story born in August with the release of the novel Light of the Jedi written by Charles Soule. Then follow two comics, Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures at IDW and Star Wars: The High Republic at Marvel, the release dates are still unknown. The children's novel A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland and the novel Into the Dark by Claudia Gray, more oriented towards young adults, will be released on September 8 and October 13.

Luminous is revealed.
It will be, as rumors indicated, #StarWars The High Republic.
A series of novels, comics for adults and books for children. Lucasfilm / Disney has never been better than when it designs original stories.

Fans wonder

Despite the announcement, the fans did not welcome the news very well. They blame Disney for its inconsistency. To understand, you have to come back in October 2012, when Lucasfilm was bought by the house with big ears. Before this date, and following the original trilogy launched in 1977, many authors and artists have developed parallel stories taking place before, during and after the events of Georges Lucas' films, all organized and validated by Lucasfilm. These stories were then part of the "extended universe" of Star Wars .

But when Disney bought Lucasfilm, the multinational decided to free itself from these stories which it gathered under the name Star Wars Legends . The whole of this production draws a coherent chronology from -36,000 to year 40, the events of year 1 being told in the first episode of the original trilogy, A New Hope . Everything that has been created since the Disney takeover (and therefore under the control of the studio) is considered "canon". The new stories created for The High Republic are therefore contradictory with some stories already written. At the hatch, in particular, the 4000 years of stories told in the arc The Old Republic, developed for years through novels, comics or video games. Between The High Republic and The Old Republic, the fans have not finished debating.

Star Wars stalls at the cinema

If the announcement of this new source of inspiration for the galactic universe promises great literary adventures, we will have to wait a little longer to see them on small and big screen. Since the failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story , Disney and Lucasfilm have greatly slowed the pace of their productions. For now, only season 2 of the Mandalorian series is expected at the end of the year. Two other series, one on the character of Cassian Andor (character played by Diego Luna in Rogue One ) and the other on Obi-Wan Kenobi with Ewan McGregor, are in the boxes but without release date.

Cinema side, it is the total blur. Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss had been poached for the price of supervising a new trilogy? A few months later, they threw in the towel. JJ Abrams had to straighten the bar by taking control of the ninth shutter? The result is not convincing: The Ascension of Skywalker does less well than the very controversial The Last Jedi by barely exceeding $ 1 billion in revenue against 1.3 billion for the film of Rian Johnson. A new trilogy had been ordered from the director of Looper but it has disappeared from radars and Johnson is rather devoted to his success With knives pulled . As for the proposal by Kevin Feige, the architect of Marvel's successes in the cinema, it is surely found somewhere in Lucasfilm's boxes.

According to Deadline, a "new hope" is raised with the arrival of the very confidential director JD Dillard and Matt Owens, screenwriter of Luke Cage and Marvel: The Agents of SHIELD . They would work on a scenario taking place on the planet of Sith Exegol, seen in Star Wars: The Ascension of Skywalker . Until further notice.
