Was the mangy fox, who last roamed Sachsenried, none at all? A reader of the Schongauer Nachrichten makes the assumption that it could be a completely different animal.

Was the mangy fox, who last roamed Sachsenried, none at all? A reader of the Schongauer Nachrichten makes the assumption that it could be a completely different animal.

Sachsenried / Schongau - Has a gold jackal from Southeast Europe or Asia actually strayed to Sachsenried? It would be a little sensation. As reported, the alleged mangy fox had appeared in Sachsenried two weeks ago; probably attracted by cat food. Local councilor Rudi Kögl took the snapshot through the living room window.

The picture spread quickly. A reader of the Schongauer Nachrichten now claims to have recognized a gold jackal in the animal. The shy animal, which comes from Southeast Europe, Asia and Africa, first appeared in Germany in 1997 and also in Bavaria in 2012. At that time the jackal stumbled into a photo trap in the Bavarian Forest. In 2017, a dead animal was discovered on the edge of the freeway near Freising. This gold jackal had obviously been run over on the A9.

In the Weilheim-Schongau district, the jackal, which is similar to the wolf but is much smaller, is still unknown. According to the Lower Hunting Authority, there are no confirmed reports in the district office. "Nothing is known to us," says Helmut Stork, department head at the Office for Public Security and Order, to which the authority belongs.

The city ranger Klaus Thien from Schongau has already received two references to the immigrant. For example, a lady who had been driving between Herzogsägmühle and Birkland in the summer of last year called him and reported a gold jackal from there. The second clue came from a hunter, according to Thien.

But the photographed animal from Sachsenried is a fox, says Thien. "I am sure that I have seen foxes like this two to three dozen times," explains the experienced forester, looking at the mange that disfigured the wild animal.

Jagdpächter considers theory unlikely

Hunting tenant Jürgen Pache, who is on the heels of the sick animal in Sachsenried, also considers the theory of the golden jackal to be very unlikely. In the meantime, he saw the fox in daylight too, he says. But unfortunately only out of the corner of my eye. According to Pache, the hunters had tracked the mangy animal close to Rudi Kögl's property. The fox had escaped from them, however, and they could not have been released from their suffering. “His overall condition is getting worse rather than better,” says the hunter less. The fox may now retreat and die.
