The president of Lombardy, the region most affected in Italy by the coronavirus, put himself in quarantine, one of his collaborators having been infected by the virus.

Attilio Fontana, who held several press conferences last week to explain the measures taken by the region to deal with the epidemic, announced this decision on Facebook via a video where he can be seen putting on a surgical mask. "At the moment I have no symptoms so I can continue to work (...) but for two weeks I will try to live in some way in isolation, " he said.

More than 300 people tested positive during the past week for coronavirus in Lombardy - the region that is home to the country's financial capital, Milan - where the epidemic killed 10 people. In the whole of Italy, the most affected country in Europe, more than 400 cases of contamination have been identified, of which 12 have died.

For Walter Ricciardi, member of the executive committee of the World Health Organization (WHO), the data on Italy could however be exaggerated with in reality only 190 fully confirmed cases, two-step tests being still in progress. Walter Ricciardi, who is also a government consultant in the fight against the coronavirus, told the daily Corriere della Sera that Veneto, the second most affected region in Italy, had decided to test hundreds of people, even when they showed no symptoms.
