With 82,164 people infected and 2,801 dead worldwide, the new Covid-19 coronavirus now concerns fifty nations. In Europe, more than fifteen countries are affected today (Denmark, Spain, France, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Greece, Croatia, Romania, North Macedonia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Estonia). But, apart from mainland China, where the epidemic started in December in the province of Hubeï, it is especially in three new countries - South Korea, Italy, Iran - that the concern is strongest. Drawing on both the data provided by news agencies and that collected by a research team from the American John Hopkins University, Le Figaro takes stock, in figures and graphs.

China: 78,497 cases, 2,744 deaths

78,497 cases of contamination are now counted. Health officials said they identified 433 new infections on Wednesday, a figure now lower than daily infections elsewhere in the world. In addition, in mainland China, since the appearance of viral pneumonia in December, 2,744 people have died, including 29 in the past 24 hours, the lowest figure since January 28.

As can be seen in the graph above, China continues to represent the vast majority of cases, but the difference between global and Chinese data, almost imperceptible a few weeks ago, is increasing day by day. A novelty clearly visible when we observe the contamination curve in the world, but outside mainland China.

South Korea: 1,766 cases, 13 deaths

505 new infections were confirmed on Thursday, bringing the total number of people infected since the start of the epidemic to 1,766. South Korea is the second center of contagion behind mainland China. The death toll currently stands at 13. Most of the Covid-19 cases in South Korea are linked to the Shincheonji Church of Jesus sect, a faithful sixty-year-old man who attended four religious services before being diagnosed.

Italy: 374 cases, 12 deaths

Italy announced on Wednesday February 26 its 12th death due to the coronavirus. The latest victim is a 69-year-old man who died in Emilia-Romagna. All the people who died in Italy from this coronavirus were elderly and most of them already suffered from health problems. The country now has 374 infected people.

Iran: 245 cases, 26 deaths

The latest assessment of the epidemic linked to the new coronavirus in Iran amounts to 245 cases of contamination and 26 deaths, announced Thursday, February 27, the spokesman of the Iranian Ministry of Health during an address broadcast on public television .

Apart from mainland China, where the virus emerged last December, Iran is the country in which the number of deaths attributed to this virus is the highest. Note that this information is nevertheless surprising because it describes a mortality rate of 11% (whereas it varies rather between 2 and 3% in the rest of the world). It cannot be excluded that the number of cases is actually minimized.

Along with South Korea and Italy, Iran is one of the three new countries affected which best explains the increase in the number of contamination (excluding mainland China). What the graph below shows.

France: 18 cases, 2 deaths

An 18th case of infection with the new coronavirus was registered on Wednesday 26 February in France. It is the wife of a patient hospitalized in Annecy, whose contamination had been reported Tuesday evening, announced the Minister of Health Olivier Véran. " His health is not a cause for concern, " said the minister, adding that no other positive diagnosis of Covid-19 was reported on Wednesday.

Of the 18 known cases in France of Covid-19 infection since the end of January, a French and a Chinese died in Paris, 11 other patients are cured and 5 are hospitalized.

The French patient who died on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday was a teacher at a college in Crépy-en-Valois in Oise, according to the Minister of National Education. The 60-year-old may not have traveled to an area affected by the coronavirus, the ministry said. " He had Covid-19 but died of a massive pulmonary embolism ," a medical source told the Parisian. He had been " tested in emergency " Tuesday, February 25, " in a very serious state ," said Director General of Health Jérôme Salomon, adding that an investigation had been launched in " emergency " to find out more. The first death recorded in France, an 80-year-old Chinese tourist, was the very first death recorded in Europe.
