Israeli authorities have approved the construction of nearly 1,800 new homes in settlements in the West Bank, the occupied Palestinian territory, the defense ministry said on Thursday.

"The Higher Planning Council of the Civil Administration in Judea and Samaria (name of the West Bank according to the Israeli government) has approved the construction of some 1,800 housing units," the ministry said in a statement.
