Nine Turkish soldiers were killed Thursday in Syrian regime airstrikes in the Idleb region of northwestern Syria, authorities say, a brutal escalation that risks triggering a firm response from Ankara.

Several soldiers were also seriously injured and repatriated for hospitalization, said the governor of the province of Hatay, bordering Syria, to the state press agency Anadolu.
