What works to prevent you from coronavirus? 2:22
(CNN) - The first confirmed case of coronavirus in Nigeria is an Italian citizen who traveled to Lagos, the African Ministry of Health said in a statement.
The person works in Nigeria and had returned from Milan to Lagos on February 25, the ministry said. "The patient is clinically stable, without serious symptoms, and is being treated at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Yaba, Lagos," the ministry said.
"We have already started working to identify all the contacts of the patient, since he entered Nigeria," the ministry added, urging citizens not to panic. "Citizens should not abuse social networks and spread erroneous information that causes fear and panic," he said.
The government has been strengthening measures "to ensure that an outbreak in Nigeria is controlled and contained quickly," according to the statement.
The first case of coronavirus in Nigeria is also the first confirmed case of the virus in sub-Saharan Africa.
