With SAP, a DAX company has settled in the "Science City". The group is now growing from a group of the same dimension. The city councilors are happy.

Garching - Siemens is moving to the new "Science City" in addition to SAP. In two sections, 800 employees from Perlach are to move to the new building in Garching, along with 100 students and professors from the Technical University of Munich, who are simulating robots, machines and projects, and want to play a major role in shaping the “Internet of Things”.

Project manager Ludger Meyer now emphasized in the city council that Siemens has been intensively involved with the Garching location since 2016. "We want to take advantage of the proximity to the TU and the opportunities that result from it." The group has a total of eight close cooperations with universities. Due to the company's headquarters in Munich, the one with TUM is of course particularly important.

"We are not building a standard Siemens building here"

"On the ground floor we will have an area in which we will try out a lot with students and teachers from the fields of computer science, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, which are just around the corner from their campus," explained Meyer. These included the areas of robots or the "Internet of Things", such as how the air conditioning technology of a house can communicate with the other controls in the building in terms of control technology. "Above all, we will digitally simulate a lot here: Machines are built and tried out completely digitally before they are actually manufactured," said Meyer. The technical world is constantly changing, "we want to prepare our customers and partners for the new industrial world 4.0".

His colleague Mario Beck presented the planned building to the city council and let a corresponding model wander through the rows. "We are not building a standard Siemens building here, but a very special one for Garching - which we will, of course, simulate before the start of construction as a digital twin so that we can recognize early on where technical collisions or inconsistencies could be," said Beck. The building is to be four stories high, which corresponds to 18.25 meters plus the technical roof structures and a photovoltaic system. The research and communication area is on the ground floor. Several inner courtyards, terraces and a roof garden are planned. "We are building a parking garage for our employees, including bicycle parking spaces and charging options for e-bikes and cars," Beck explained. Places for car sharing are also planned, the building is to be connected to geothermal energy.

City councilors want apartments and a daycare center

The draft was well received by the city council, and the councils unanimously approved the decision. Jürgen Ascherl (CSU), for example, welcomed the project and asked whether Siemens might be planning factory apartments or children's facilities. Josef Euringer (BfG) supported him and said that between the new communication zone and the Science City from Siemens and SAP, factory apartments would ideally fit. Ulrike Haerendel (SPD) reminded that Siemens already has childcare facilities in Erlangen, "that would be a nice continuation in Garching". Meyer admitted that no one had spoken about this topic yet, "but I am taking these ideas into the planning".

Mayor Dietmar Gruchmann (SPD) gave another "tip" that there was room in Garching for two "beautiful wind turbines that could be equipped with Siemens technology". Hans-Peter Adolf (Greens) was also very satisfied with the presentation, "but I would be interested to know which mobility concept Siemens is pursuing if 800 new employees show up here every morning." As far as Meyer had to admit, if you weren't, it would be but plan.

The city councilors were less enthusiastic about the SAP plans. You can find out why here.
