The ecological penalty, which taxes cars that emit the most CO2, had already been increased on January 1. It will be even more so for certain vehicles from March 1st.
Why a second penalty grid three months after that of January? The new WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedures) standards have become the rule for calculating vehicle emission rates. They are more precise than those implemented so far.
From now on, the calculation of CO2 - and pollutants - does not only relate to the type of vehicle but also to its options, which can increase its emissions (heavier rims, a sunroof, etc.). In summary, a model with many options could be taxed a little more, while the same model in a basic version would be a little less.
According to the websites of certain brands, the increase in CO2 emissions following the change in standards could reach 20 to 40 g / km with optional equipment.
