Driest made a name for himself as a novelist, theater writer, director, producer and actor . He never took off his image as a non-conformist and rebel. Born in Szczecin in 1939 as the son of a businessman and a piano teacher, Driest was brushed for riot from the start.

Driest's family fled to the West, his parents divorced in 1950. He flew from high school four times before he finished fourth as the fourth in his class. He did not finish his subsequent law studies , although he had passed his civil law exam. In 1965 , he robbed a bank in Lower Saxony three weeks before the oral law exam - so he spent three years and four months in the Celle correctional facility. In 2012, he claimed that “Markus Lanz” had also robbed a bank in Göttingen, but this could never be proven.

His first artistic success came with the autobiographical novel "The Brutalization of Franz Blum ", which was later filmed with Driest in a supporting role.
This led to orders as a screenwriter and theater author, whereby Driest was also financed by port work in Hamburg and smuggling of Danish porn .
Driest experienced a TV scandal in 1995 when he was stabbed as a presenter in front of the camera. The "Private Life Show" show was announced as "live", but was recorded and many horrified viewers called ARD. "Now the ARD is completely crazy," wrote the "Süddeutsche Zeitung".

"For me, writing means a new and new approach to life - doing everything differently and correctly, if only in imagination and on paper," said Driest.
