Driest's family fled to the West, his parents divorced in 1950. He flew from high school four times before he finished fourth as the fourth in his class. He did not finish his subsequent law studies , although he had passed his civil law exam. In 1965 , he robbed a bank in Lower Saxony three weeks before the oral law exam - so he spent three years and four months in the Celle correctional facility. In 2012, he claimed that “Markus Lanz” had also robbed a bank in Göttingen, but this could never be proven.

His first artistic success came with the autobiographical novel "The Brutalization of Franz Blum ", which was later filmed with Driest in a supporting role.
