Syria: Macron calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities

Emmanuel Macron calls for the immediate cessation of hostilities in the Idlib province of Syria and called on Russia and Turkey to establish a "sustainable and verifiable" ceasefire, we read in a statement from the Elysee on Saturday. The head of state met today on the subject with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The Turkish president said on Saturday that he had asked Vladimir Putin to withdraw Russia from the Syrian battlefield, where 34 Turkish soldiers were killed this week, and to let Ankara deal with the Damascus regime alone.

“The President of the Republic stressed the imperative of an immediate cessation of hostilities and called on Russia and Turkey to establish a lasting and verifiable cease-fire in accordance with the commitments made to France and Germany at the Summit quadripartite of Istanbul in the fall of 2018 ” , underlines the Élysée.

The head of state also calls on Russia "to assume its responsibilities as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council by putting an immediate end to the military offensive in north-west Syria and to respect international humanitarian law, the protection of civilian populations, personnel and humanitarian access ” .
