Too strong for Tsitsipas, Djokovic titled in Dubai

2020-02-29T17:06:32.788Z

Novak Djokovic is still undefeated in 2020: the world No.1 won the 79th title of his career at the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai on Saturday, defeating the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4 in 1h17.

Stefanos Tsitsipas, a rising star in men's tennis (6th in the world at only 21), put up a good resistance in the exchanges, but he could not do anything against the Serb, who now has 18 victories in as many matches this year. In a match that was initially hooked, Tsitsipas was the first to be dangerous on the service of his opponent, obtaining a break point at 2-2. But the Serb knew how to tighten the screw to continue to race in the lead. And, at 4-3 in his favor, he converted his first break point from a magnificent passing. A decisive advantage which allowed him to win the first round in 39 minutes.

Fifth Serbian title in the emirate

The Greek was more aggressive in the second run. Breaked at 2-2, he took Djokovic's service in the process to return to a tie. The latter then raised his tone and broke to 4-4, an advantage this time definitive. The two players were generally quite serene behind their services, but it is in the important points that Tsitsipas did not make the weight: he certainly converted one of his two break points, but he especially lost the three qu 'he conceded to Novak Djokovic. It is the fifth title of the Serb in the emirate, after 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013, and his third title of the year, after the ATP Cup, won with Serbia in January, and the Open from Australia, its 17th Grand Slam tournament, on February 1st. Friday, in the semi-finals, he had almost eliminated against the French Gaël Monfils, who had obtained three match balls before collapsing completely (2-6, 7-6 (10/8), 6-1 ). Tsitsipas lost in the final for the second year in a row in Dubai, after losing 6-4, 6-4 to Roger Federer in 2019. The Greek recorded his sixth defeat in the final of an ATP tournament, for five titles.
