(CNN) - Pope Francis reported on Sunday that a cold will prevent him from participating in a week-long spiritual retreat outside of Rome, scheduled to start Sunday afternoon.

The Vatican did not respond to a question on Saturday about whether Francisco has been examined for possible infection with coronavirus.

On Thursday, the Vatican indicated that the Pope was suffering from a "slight indisposition" that led him to cancel his public events in the last four days, and on Friday, authorities said the Pope continued to hold private meetings at his residence in the Vatican .

Speaking from his balcony in St. Peter's Square on Sunday, the pontiff's voice was clearly affected by a cold and interrupted his talk to cough several times.

"Unfortunately, a cold forces me not to participate this year [in the spiritual retreat]," said the pope.

“I will continue the meditations from here. I join the curia spiritually and all the people who do spiritual exercises at home. ”
