Update from Sunday, March 1st, 2020, 8:04 am: An incredibly tragic accident occurred in the Homberger Efzewiesen in Schwalm-Eder-Kreis (Hesse) in the early Saturday evening. Three children, two four-year-old twins and a 10-year-old child, were playing in the allotment area near the water when the two four-year-olds suddenly fell into the Efze . One of the two twins was saved, the other died later in the hospital.

A large contingent of emergency services, including the fire brigade, DLRG, flow rescuers, divers and the police, searched feverishly for the second missing child . The fire brigade illuminated several areas due to the darkness, but simultaneously searched the entire course of the efze with hand lamps.

Flow savers from the DLRG searched for the four-year-old in the water and found him about 90 minutes after falling into the Efze downstream in the Hohlebachmühle area.

The emergency services of the DLRG and fire brigade immediately took the child through rough terrain to the ambulance, where the crew and emergency doctor immediately did everything to reanimate the twin. While the other rescued child survived the accident and was immediately taken to a children's clinic for further care, the other child died a little later in the hospital despite all efforts.

District Administrator Winfried Becker and District Fire Inspector (KBI) Tanja Dittmar were visibly affected on the spot in Homberg. Dittmar: "The current is just too strong, a four-year-old child can't manage to hold it back."

It was not easy for the rescue workers deployed. “Such an assignment is very close to everyone. It is a heavy burden (...) we have also taken precautions, ”KBI Dittmar explained the situation for the emergency services. A debriefing should take place in the evening.

While a child could free itself from the water, the brother drifted downstream with the current. According to police, the 4-year-old boy was found lying in the water by promptly initiated rescue measures. The first resuscitation measures on site were followed by further, most intensive inpatient measures in the hospital to save the child's life. Tragically, the boy ultimately died in the hospital. His parents are looked after by emergency ministers, the police said.

According to the police, around 60 firefighters from the Homberg , Felsberg and Wabern weirs, the DLRG with 19 assistants - including current divers - and the Homberg police were involved in the rescue operation.
